Dreams of Recent Months

11-8-01

I had agreed to help a kid who was getting his master's degree in psychology by talking to his professor about serial killers. But when the professor called me, he only wanted to ask about terrorists, and his Texas accent was so strong I could hardly understand him. Then suddenly I was sitting in a coffeeshop reading a Shakespeare folio and eating a muffin. I was putting butter and jam on it and the jam dripped onto the folio pages. Mark Twain came to the table with a damp cloth so I could clean it up. I had been drinking coffee but I looked over and saw that it had changed to a Wild Turkey & soda with one ice cube so huge that it towered over the glass.

I went to a restaurant that had kitten on the menu. This seemed like a normal thing; it was a typical New Orleans restaurant -- shrimp, oysters, kitten. Ice Cube was the chef. They had live kittens in cages in the kitchen and I wanted to buy them all to save their lives, but I didn't want Cube to think I was a sentimental wuss.

Sherlock Holmes was locked in a mausoleum while investigating a case. He had to spend the night in there with a pretty fresh corpse, but he didn't mind because he was logical and hardcore.
